drawing and naming compounds
« on: April 05, 2005, 04:53:02 PM »
hi everyone i have my final asignment due in two weeks time and i am down to the finally question and i must say i am stumped. Here is the question and maybe someone can help me out.

Draw the structure and give an acceptable name for compounds A through G in the reaction schemes below:

Toluene + NBS + CCl4 --> A + Li --> B + CuI --> C + CH3CH2CH2Br --> D

PhHC=CHPh + Br2+ CCl4 --> E + 2NaNH3 + NH3 --> F + H + Pd/C --> G

so far i have the following compound figured out (i think)

A= Alpha-bromotoluene
B=
C=
D=
E=
F=
G=

I will post more answers here when i figuer them out

You need to know wat type of reactions they are...

Toluene + NBS + CCl4 --> A  (similar to allylic reaction)
A + Li --> B (seems to be an organometallic reagent synthesis -- i believe it should be 2Li though)
B + CuI --> C (another organometallic synthesis - should be 2B + CuI)
C + CH3CH2CH2Br --> D (this usually accompanies the above reaction of organocopper)

PhHC=CHPh + Br2+ CCl4 --> E (simple alkene reaction, it forms something vicinal)
E + 2NaNH3 + NH3 --> F (hint: elimination to form..)
F + H + Pd/C --> G (this reaction should be self explanatory)

sorry I can't give the answers
this web site is here so we can help each other, and not just give the answers
I'll be willing to help you untill you get it all   :)
