synthesys of methyl benzoat
« on: April 06, 2014, 02:25:48 PM »
Helloo,

I would like if someone could help me with this question.

After syntheses of methyl Benzoat from benzoic acid, methanol and sulphuric acid, the next step is purification. In that step after adding water and ether which layer is ether layer (top or bottom) and which layer is water layer?

And then when we seperate the ether layer and add natrium bicarbonate which layer is ether layer again and which is water?

I would appriciate if u could give me an answer because there are different answers on the internet and i am not sure which one is correct.

Look up the densities of ether and water and you tell me which is on the top.

I think the top layer is water layer and the bottom layer is ether layer, but I was confused because of the all different answers i have found on the internet.

Densyiti of ether is 0,7134 g/cm3, and density of water is 0,998. But if in the ether layer there is methyl benzoat, and in water layer  some of benzoic acid that didnt react, or sulphuric acid, does it mean that ether layer will be at the botoom, and water layer on the top

Wolud You please explain to me is this ok or not?

If ether has a lower density than water then it will be on the top.
The idea here is to get you to think about the problem and not provide complete answers.
