Arsenic Poisoning
« on: April 30, 2014, 10:56:12 AM »
I'm new on this forum, so I apologize if I'm in the wrong section.

I'm in medical school and coursing General Chemistry. I have to find scientific articles related to this topic: Arsenic poisoning. We've searched for lots of articles (15-20 aprox) and selected our best, but no one was adequate enough for the course. I was just wondering if you could recommend more places (websites) to find this kind of articles.

It has to be chemical and no biological. It has to be experimental and no a review nor clinical case nor statistical or social issue.

Thanks.

That's a tall order, how can you discuss toxicity without biology.

The cause of arsenic poisioning is blocking a biological process.

What have you got so far on the chemistry of this process? What enzyme does it affect? How does it interact with this enzyme?

There is always sci-finder for this kind of stuff.
Where did you find those articles? Were those form peer-rewieved yournals or from internet? This might be the reason why they were not found adequate.
Try this one
Arsenic toxicity and potential mechanisms of action
Michael F Hughes
Toxicology Letters
Volume 133, Issue 1, 7 July 2002, Pages 1–16

Read it carefuly and then, continue to the articles quoted in this review and you will find one which has experimental part in it.

I dont get it to be honest. Chemistry today is linked together with other fields - biology, medicine, materials.. so saying it cant be biological means, that you will find any articles at all, because "arsenic posioning" is directly linked with biology and there is no other way.

It just occurred to me that maybe we are too focused on the term poisoning being linked to toxicity in biological systems.

There is another type of poisoning which arsenic exhibits.

This is just one example of many. Maybe this is what they are looking for.

There are search engines dedicated to papers and journals. Your university may have access to one, so you should ask around for any available engine. If any, you'll most likely have access only inside your university.

I use Scopus mostly. You can use http://scholar.google.com/ in a pinch.

Archer: yes catalytic poisoning could be the right answer for this task, I didnt think of it.
Althought it seems weird that in medical shcool, they would forbid to use/find biological articles in this case.

I know it has to be related with some biological aspects, but the idea is that chemistry should be the central topic since it's a Chemistry course. By the way, I'm going to try Scopus and that article about toxicity.

Thanks for your advices!·

The basic chemistry behind this is that soluble As3+ compounds ireversibly reacts with -SH function groups in enzyme and thus deactivating them and also is involved in creating reactive oxygen species which are pretty harmful to the body.
Did you look into the article I posted? It seems like the one you need.
