Topic: Is it possible to yield more of product than the starting material in the synthe  (Read 1984 times)

I'm working on a project, synthesis of oxycodone from thebaine. Thebaine->1, 4-hydroxycodeinone -> oxycodone. I was looking at the example data for the synthesis from the reference paper but found out they obtained greater amount (g) of crude product of oxycodone than the amount of 1, 4-HC they obtained and used for the second step of synthesis.

and Example 1. at the bottom of the paper.
They used 125g of thebaine as the starting material and obtained 1, 4-HC with percent yield of 76% which is 91g (not in the paper, I calculated).
But after the second step, the amount of crude oxycodone (before recrystallization) was 110g (86% of 125g).
Is this possible?? Is it normal in synthesis type reaction? or am i missing something?

Of course this is possible provided the molecular weight of the product is greater than that of the starting material.
In yout case have a look and see which bits they have added to the molecules you mention. Work out the molecular weights.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!
