Hello, I have some questions. Help me out.

1) When a neutral atom gains an electron, why do energy changes occur?
2) "Electron gain process can be exothermic or endothermic", explain this statement.
3) When ions form a crystal, why does energy get released?

These questions popped up when I was reading my textbook and I can't find answers to there. Please help me.
