When and How did the Halogens first form in the Universe

I was creating a cartoon series based on our elements, and this question will determine an evolutionary path for some of my characters.
I thought since we get chlorine, flourine, etc from salts. How did they form in their elemental form.
I also wondered were all the elements present in the universe before compounds existed. Or, what compounds were here before the elements.  The man made ones don't count, Lets just say the first 50 elements,

Natural element abundances are theorized to pretty much all come from stars.
