Reactions with Copper acetate?
« on: May 11, 2014, 06:31:44 PM »
I'm looking for chemicals that will react with Cu(CH3COO)2
I'm building a supply of chemicals all made with basic stuff in the house or at my local hardware store. Thanks!

Did you see the stickies at the top of this forum thread
I know there are broken links and other debris in some of the threads but
http://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?topic=8715.msg271612#msg271612
gives you a link to work with
by the way I hope you also read the forum rules

Maybe you could share your list of products and why you selected them.

Many of the items commonly available products are a mixture of compounds that can be difficult to work with if you are trying to have a precise result.
An example
I look at the label of a drain cleaner containing sulfuric acid and note the word buffered.

Thanks for the link. Lots of useful stuff there. I have read the rules. If I am breaking one please let me know. I don't
think I am but it's totally possible.

The household products I have are Vinegar, Hydrochloric Acid, Citric Acid, Ammonium Hydroxide, Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Hydroxide, Baking Soda, and many metals including, Aluminum. Gold, Copper, Silver, Zinc, Steel, Tungsten, Lead. I chose these because they were the most available in my area and fairly cheap. Not including the metals. I'm a welder so I usually have random metals on hand. Being a welder I also have these Acetylene, Carbon Dioxide, Argon, and Nitrogen.

I checked the chemicals I have and researched the MSDS for them and I'm not seeing any other impurities. But MSDS sheets are sometimes unreliable.

Also I mentioned Copper Acetate because everywhere I look it up, all my results show how to make it. I made it already. I want to use it to make other chemicals for my supply. I searched so many times on Google and such but only how to make it and copper plating are the results.

I doubt you have broken any forum rules, but wanted to keep you informed.

You probably already have the following
Borax, Washing Soda, table salt, sugar, mineral oil, olive oil, isopropyl alcohol
and many more.

What are you going to make with Copper Acetate?

I do have those minus the borax but that's cheap. I also have ethyl alcohol.

I have been using the Copper acetate to plate things like paperclips and coins and such just for fun. But I'm trying to work on an insecticide for one of my garden plots that is riddled with thrips and other pests. My plot has extreme alkaline soil and could use some acidity. So I figured maybe I can get a two for one deal making a insecticide which also raises the acidity of the soil. Through research I can't find many uses for copper acetate or things to create from copper acetate.

Also, I dissolved some of my copper acetate in distilled water and added a small piece if Zinc metal to it. It seems to have formed some gelatinous cloudy material in it. Any idea of what this may be?

I also own several chemicals like you and may you prepare acetate Copper way that I mentioned and could I get many of the materials you lucky and have a lot of chemicals, but I praise be to God I do not have little than reported so you heat the baking soda to get sodium carbonate solution, and then you add sodium carbonate to precipitate consists of copper acetate bluish green carbonate of copper base and may you publish that experience on another forum
