Stereodescriptors with small letter and number

What does the stereodescriptor 3a on the carbon atom adjacent to the nitrogen mean?
Is a for axial chirality?
Why is the number 3?

a is not for axial orientation. The 3a is used to differentiate the other C atom that is numbered 3. That's all there is to it.
