Applying to Ph.D Program
« on: July 02, 2014, 09:47:17 PM »
I'm going into my senior year of undergrad finishing up my biochemistry degree. My major GPA (in chemistry) is a 3.56 and my cumulative is a 3.30. I'm also doing research and will have a thesis completed and defended by my graduation. I just want to make sure I'm not going to have too much of an issue when it comes to being accepted to a Ph.D program. I've achieved all A/A- in my chemistry lecture courses except for the second semester of physical chemistry (quantum), which I got a B in. My cumulative is only average because most of my "gen ed" courses were B range.

I'm just starting this process now and a little unsure on how the application process works.

You'll be fine. Each school may have slightly different requirements, but most will require GRE - both general and chemistry.

I suggest identifying ahead of time professors with whom you would be happy to work for at schools in which you are interested, and contact them. Networking like this ahead of time can grease the wheels for getting accepted at your school of choice (it'll also help ensure that you don't end up in a lab that you're not interested).
