What is the name for CH3CH2(CH3)C=CHCl ?
« on: July 10, 2014, 06:13:03 AM »
Hi

Is 1-chloro-2-methyl-1-butene the correct name for the following compound: CH3CH2(CH3)C=CHCl ?
I'm very unsure, can someone please verify if I have the correct name ? Is the methyl group in brackets attached to the right of the carbon or to the left of the carbon ?

Thanks

1-chloro 2-methylbutene is ambiguous about the position of the double bond

The first name defines where the C=C is. Your alternative does not have that. Compare
1-chloro-2-methylbut-1-ene and 1-chloro-2-methylbut-2-ene.
Note also that you can have cis and trans isomers in this compound, so that needs to be defined as well.

Thank you for confirming with me.

However the reason for posting this question is when I search it over the internet I can't find details on the specific compound of 1-chloro-2-methylbut-1-ene, but I do find information about 3-chloro-2-methylbut-2-ene and 3-chloro-2-methylbut-1-ene, leading me to think that the compound 1-chloro-2-methylbut-1-ene doesn't exist or I might have named it incorrectly. Does the compound 1-chloro-2-methylbut-1-ene exist and is it the correct name for the structural formula CH3CH2(CH3)C=HCl ? According to me the last two mentioned compounds ( 3-chloro-2-methylbut-2-ene and 3-chloro-2-methylbut-1-ene)do not agree with the structural formula that I gave but I'm very unsure. Also for the structural formula CH3CH2(CH3)C=HCl, the methyl group in brackets does it attach to the carbon on its left or the carbon on its right ?

Thanks

Yes it is the correct name. Obviously this is a compound that is made to order, as far as I can judge.
The structure is
Cl/C=C(CC)/C
and the methyl group is attached to the C=C.

3-chloro-2-methylbut-2-ene is
C/C(C)=C(Cl)/C
and
3-chloro-2-methylbut-1-ene is
C=C(C)C(Cl)C
