Hi!
I'm new to this forum and I would need an explanation of reaction with ethanol and hypochlorite (I dont know which yet? sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite?).
Let me just tell you that I would simply like to make acetaldehyde (ethanal). I think this is possible with using both, sodium and calcium hypochlorite, but I've found out that I would need a special catalyst to do this when using sodium hypochlorite, but I'm not sure if this is also true for calcium hypochlorite? So, I don't know if it would work with just mixing CaOCl2 and C2H6O? If it would work, is this reaction exothermic? Since ethanal has very low boiling point (around room temp.), I would probably need to condense it, using lab condenser... (how do I store it when I make it? I'm affraid that the pressure would build up inside the container because of its low boiling point.) Do I need to keep it in fridge?
And It would be nice if you would explained simplified, because I'm not chemist or chemistry student, I just found great interest in chemistry and it became my hobby, otherwise I'm mechatronic technician student.
If you want to know why I need ethanal, it's just because of making new chemicals from ones that I have (I love doing that), it's a challenge... And don't worry I'm aware of ethanals toxicity (it's carcinogen). Later I might use it for making some other new chemicals...
