Need help identifying lab glassware
« on: March 20, 2015, 04:55:16 PM »
I came across some glassware that I've been unable to identify, and was hoping someone here might know what it is. It is a large tube, approximately 40" long, 2" in diameter, with side tubulations near each end. The bottom is rounded (at least I assume it's the bottom, I don't know how this would normally be oriented). There are no markings on the glass that I can see. I'm not sure if it's a custom piece or something standard.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

I think its an reaction tube where you had for example titaniumdioxide and  Charcoal mixture. The area where you hve the mixture get heated by an burner or the tube is set in a round electrical heater. Then you connect a chlorine bottle to the device and with a low stream of clorine you will convert the Titanium dioxide to titanium chloride. This you have to collect on the other end by cooling. Of course you need more equipment to handle the chlorine fumes and also the phosgen what is produced.

TiO2 + 4 Cl2 + 2 C => TiCl4 + 2 COCl2
