Topic: Temp and E2 SN2 selectivity? why? mathematical expressions of d-orbitals.  (Read 2068 times)

Looked online and  in textbooks... cant find...why if u have same reactants...higher temp favors elimination E2(base attack of beta carbon H+) while lower temperature favors substitution (e.g. Sn2) nucleophic attack?  And dont understand 3 out of the 5 different mathematical expressions for 3d orbitals... viz... d then (subscript)xz  and d z^2 squared (with the donut shape)  and d x^2-y^2.  I see where these p orbitals are oriented on x,y,z grid but how were these -math expressions- derived or come to be associated with these different orbitals? a math question?

According to forum rules, you must show an attempt to answer a question first before we can help you.  I get you started on the first problem, however.  There are several possible explanations for the effect of temperature on which direction a reaction takes, but it is helpful to know whether the reactions in question are reversible or irreversible.
