How do I make activated carbon?
« on: January 08, 2015, 07:26:26 PM »
I obtained carbon from adding H₂SO₄ to sucrose indoors...(It wasn't pretty) Anyway, I would like to know how to turn this carbon into activated carbon. I've researched this on Google, finding very little helpful information(mostly on how to make activated carbon from wood and organic objects). I've tried heating this carbon in a beaker to ~600℉(~316℃), but I have no idea how to know if the product is actually activated carbon. Please forgive my lack of knowledge for I am relatively new to chemistry. Thank you in advance!

Maybe this will help testing to see if you have activated carbon

If I had the time, I would buy some certified activated carbon and do some experimenting.
