diluting (water?) of Mehtanol + Alkyl Benzoate = separation
« on: September 22, 2015, 01:58:24 AM »
Hello,
I am trying to formulate a makeup-brush-cleaner.

Available commercial products lists SDA-40, and C-12-15 Alkyl Benzoate. (no water listed)

Experimenting a little, the Alkyl Benzoate (AB) is fully ethanol-soluble , and water-insoluble.

adding water at any stage to the AB+ethanol solution - separates (water sinks below AB+ethanol) and would never mix.
current ratio that I like is about 10%-20% AB, and 80%-90% SDA-40

My goal is to dilute the solution, to have a lower % of ethanol, since 80-90% is too aggressive to the brush and skin, without increasing the % of AB (quite expensive and too oily above 20%).

Is there any way to incorporate water into the solution, while both keeping it transparent, and non-separable ?
if not water, what can be used to dilute the solution (lower ethanol %) without increasing oiliness ?

Thanks a lot

Moshik

In general - no way to make it soluble if it is insoluble.

Please note per forum rules we will not help you prepare your own drugs nor cosmetics, and brush cleaner is pretty close to the latter.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the forum rules.
I am just trying to understand and experiment the liquid I have in hands.

That means, the commercial product I have (ingredients listed are: SD-40, Alkyl Benzoate, Fragrance)
has zero chance of having water in it (which is unlisted in ingredients) ?

What can I do If I need a lower % of Ethanol, but don't want the increased oilyness of too high % of the Alkyl Benzoate ?
what other element can be used to dilute and balance these two ?
