Role of amino acids

Hello,
I'm currently working on a project about bio-engineering.  Is there a resource to look up the specific functions of amino acids by each one?  So say all of the phenylalanine residues in E. Coli. for example. I'm new to this and a point the right direction would be appreciated.

Aminoacids are - first of all - just building blocks. Sure, some are more common in specific polypeptides (like collagen) or those that have to be lipophilic/hydrophobic, but for me that's not equivalent of them having "specific functions" in general.

IMO there is a problem with your formulation of the question.  Consider the amino acid histidine.  In some proteins, it binds to metal ions such as zinc.  In some enzymes it functions as a general base; in others it functions as a nucleophile.

A good starting point would be to reference the chapter on amino acids and protein structure in a biochemistry text book, which will tell you the general properties of the amino acids and how they might influence proteins structure and function.  For example see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK22379/
