confused about this compound...
« on: May 04, 2006, 08:36:23 PM »
i mixed hydrogen peroxide, cobalt chloride, and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) together, and got a bright green solution, with a dark brown precipitate. along with a lot of unknown gas.  Id like to know what any of these compounds are...it also gave off a lot of heat... :-\ :-\

I think i have it figured out...

H2O2 + CoCl2 + NaHCO3 =

H2O + 0 + NaCl2 + CoHCO3 ???

No! In your reaction Cobalt is reduced and there is no oxidation. Besides, There is no compound with the formula NaCl2. I think that the brownish ppt. that you got was Cobalt carbonate

Cobalt carbonate CoCO3

I am curious.
Was the precipitate brown or deep red or dark purple color?

I thought that oxygen usually existed as O2 when it is a gas.
Are we sure that oxygen was the gas released?

Yes, it was a very dark brown color, and oxygen was present (glowing ember placed near the solution burst into flame ).   I forgot the subscript 2 when i placed in O, by the way...

A similar reaction (Hydrogen Peroxide - Cobalt Chloride - Potassium Tartrate) is discussed at http://www.flinnsci.com/Documents/demoPDFs/Chemistry/CF0255.01.pdf

Your reaction is a tiny bit different, but with a bit of thinking, I hope you will be able to piece everything together ;)
