Am I correct in my examples assuming:

SCN->Br->I-     Br- has a greater trans effect than I-
NO22<Cl-<NH3     Cl- has less trans effect than NH3

you are wrong,

the correct ordering of the ligands is as follows

SCN, I > Br and

NO2 > Cl > NH3

for detailed discussion on trans effect you can refer Inorganic chemistry by James H Huhee. or any other leading inorganic chemistry book.
