In Poland instead of crossing fingers we keep thumbs inside of the hand (see 1st picture).

But one have to be very carefull with such things. 2nd picture is a "fig" - in Poland it means "you will get nothing" and is more or less commonly used and not vulgar, perhaps slightly rude, but nothing more. But don't try to show it is Bulgaria - AFAIK it is explicitly sexual symbol there (symbolizing female genitalia).

Sorry for the pictures quality, I am too lazy to make better ones ATM.

why do i get the feeling someone's out to punch me...? :)

now i know why my friends keep asking me to perform that gesture, and they all go down in laughter when i oblige them :D

Apropos other cultures: my room-mate just told me american delis are of the size of whole austrian supermarkets.  ;D

Mmmmm American supermarket and American food which is usually highly proccessed. I'm under weight at 5' 8" only 120lbs so I eat as I wish when I wish, which is quite often. I need to go to the deli also. I'm low on deli meat.

Yes, it's interesting to learn about gestures in other places, as they may be quite different.  I heard once there was a politician who went to China for diplomatic reasons and offended the people by using the gesture meaning "peace" (extending the index and middle fingers with the thumb and other fingers curled into a ball, displayed with the palm side of your hand facing the person).  That gesture is somewhat rarely-used now, though.

Not quite... a gun-shaped hand would have the index finger and thumb extended.  I'll try to make a picture to show the difference once I feel like locating my digital camera.
