Help with this reaction
« on: April 12, 2016, 07:01:57 PM »
Hi, I'm looking for help with the reaction of Manesium with CuSO4 * 5H2O, my guess is that it forms MgSO4 and Cu, however my teacher said it was not the case, that it was fomed CuO, wich seems correct since I could see the black precipitate in the solution.
Maybe is similar in some form to the reaction with Na, which first reacts with the water to form NaOH and then with the CuSO4 to form CuO, but I can't come up with an ecuation for magnesium.

Assuming it is CuO and it is produced with Mg(OH)2 as an intermediate, can you write individual reactions? One for the conversion of Mg to Mg(OH)2, one for the conversion of Cu2+ to CuO?
