HClO4 stronger acid than H3PO4
« on: April 24, 2016, 09:09:21 AM »
Hey!

I was wondering is HClO4 stronger than H3PO4 because when ionised they both have 4 canonical forms (unless i have made a mistake)

But in the case of HClO4 the negative charge seems to be more delocalised and spread out thus making it a stronger acid.

Could somebody confirm this for me? Or correct it?

Thank you

Look at Pauling rules for oxoacid systematics.

Or better yet: compare Ka values. Hint: if you won't be able to find Ka value for perchloric acid it is is because it is so strong it is quite difficult to determine concentration of undissociated HClO4 in the solution.
