Hi all

As an exam preparation, I tried to solve the following exercise, but I have no idea, how to do it.


What is the maximum number of electrons in an atrom that can have the following quantum numbers?

a) n=2, ms = -1/2
b) n = 5, l = 3
c) n = 4, l = 3 , ml = -3
d) n = 4, l = 0, ml = 0


As I don't have solutions to it, it would be great, if anyone could help me to solve it.

If you tried to solve the exercise, please explain what you tried.

Take the first part, (a). There are a limited number of electrons that can have the principle quantum number (n) equal to two. (Why?) How many electrons can fit in the n = 2 state? How many of them can have a spin of -1/2?
