Question: One isotope of a nonmetallic element has mass number 16 and 7 neutrons in the nucleus. The anion derived from the isotope has 10 electrons. Write the symbol for this anion.

I do not understand why the answer is not the fluoride ion, because fluorine has 9 protons and 9 electrons, and its anion has 10 electrons. (My assignment website is marking me wrong for this answer)

If your information is correct, then
¹⁶F^-
should be correct

Sounds like F^- to me as well. Please note many computer HW systems are PITA when it comes to properly formatting your answer, chances are that's what you are fighting with, not the chemistry.
