i am truly lost is reagent A an amine ? to combat the aldol reaction with base. ? how did they go from 5 ring to 6 ring and conjugated .please help

Your question is slightly not clear ... Can you show your attempt?
Aldol reaction can take place in acidic medium also .Don't you think it is aldol followed by nucleophilic substitution in step II and III.What do you think?
