Alkyne with H2?

Will this stop at the alkene or will it form the alkane? I know H2 with Pd/C turns the alkyne into the alkane but I'm curious what would happen if only H2 was added to the alkyne.

What do catalysts do in general? What do you know about other hydrogenation catalysts besides Pd?
