Removal of oxidation on bronze cymbals
« on: June 19, 2006, 10:32:51 PM »
I have a friend that has been trying to remove the oxidation off of his bronze cymbals.  He says they are seriously affecting the sound and all and he is anxious to remove them.  He has tried scrubbing them with soap and water and soft rag, but the non-oxidized parts just get shiny and the oxidation remains.

I was thinking that perhaps some sort of acid, weak might help to remove it.  Some other people I've talked to mentioned various cleaning supplies, countertop cleaners etc.  Any suggestions?

Ther oxide layer on bronze is very thin and it doesn't affect the sound. If you start removing it with some acid you'll end up dissolving some of the tin from the bronze alloy and that will affect the sound.
Chemists do it periodically on table.

Well, either way he wants to get rid of it.  Any suggestions that might not eat away at the bronze?

Acid is probably a bad idea. Tell him to keep them polished. I keep mine polished and they're fine. I clean my cymbals and polish them around once a month.
