Alkyne to aldehyde help
« on: November 24, 2017, 08:47:02 AM »
I'm trying to review for my upcoming test and the professor handed out some problems.  I'm slightly confused on this one.  the reaction is going from a 3 carbon to a single carbon.  Is my reaction correct or am I missing something?  Thanks.

Typos (Lindlar) and other things (there are other ways you can reduce to the alkene, and do the ozonolysis) aside this looks fine.

CC#CC1CCCCC1 to  O=CC1CCCCC1

There is a side product containing the other two carbons for these reactions. You break a C-C bond.

An aside: some authors use a thick arrow to indicate a retro-synthesis.
