Chemicals for Binding of ammonia in Aqueous Solution
« on: January 23, 2018, 07:23:27 PM »
Hi There,

I currently use sodium formaldehyde bisulfite for binding of ammonia in water, i also use it for removal of chlorine.

Are there any other chemicals that will bind ammonia in an aqueous solution that are not formaldehyde based?

Any acid can do it. Ammonia will be caught as ammonium NH4+.

If you want to destroy it Nitrite NO2- can be used. The ammonia will be converted to nitrogen.

Im more looking to bind it as it is produced.

Using Sodium Formaldehyde bi-sulfite it reacts with ammonia to create a aminomethanesulfonate salt.

Im wondering if there are any other products that will do the same, will another aldehyde be sufficient?

There are also commercially available ammonia absorbing zeolites.
