Disconnection scheme
« on: March 30, 2018, 01:26:05 AM »
Somebody please help me with this disconnection question. Its starting material is ethyl ethanoate. I am not sure what steps it will take to create an ethyl ethanoate as a starting material

Hello, first of all, you should show us some of your work ((check forum rules)
second, how do you know that its ethyl acetate? There definitely might be more options

Oh my bad, I didn't know about that. But here's what I got and I am struggling with my synthesis assignment so I am not sure if I am on the right track or not. Any help or feedback is appreciated :)

By the way, the question states that the disconnect scheme has several steps culminating in ethyl ethanoate as one of the starting material

your disconnection scheme does not give ethyl ethanoate

And it does not make much sense. For each disconection, you need reliable forward reaction but i cant see any reliable reaction for your disconnections.

should I disconnect between the α and β carbons first since there are diketones instead of doing a FGI?

well you can try and see where it leads to, as I said already: there could be multiple pathways. I would, start with this dissconnection first. From there it should be obvious how to get to the ethylaceate
