Nomenclature
« on: July 11, 2006, 02:50:48 PM »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me to name a compound if I describe to you.

It is an organic molecule with a 6 carbon atoms in the chain.  An oxygen atom is attached with a double bond to carbon number 2.

There is also a C=C double bond between carbon 4 and 5.

Any help would be great.

chain of 6 carbons : hex...
C=C : ...en(e)... (add (E) or (Z) at the beginning of the name if you know it)
>C=O : ...one

Then you just put in the locants. It helps if you draw it our yourself.

I have drawn the structure  but I am not sure where to insert the numbers indicating where the various feature of the molecule are attached.

I have a feeling that this molecule is called hex-4-en-2-one,  is this correct, or am i just making up molecules??

Cheers

Yes, it's 4-hexen-2-one.
