what is the role of sulphuric acid in the following reaction:
β-naphthol + methanol +H2SO4 ---> product
Will product form as 4-hydroxy naphthaldehyde if sulphuric acid works as an oxidiser? or Will it be possible to occur dehydration?

Sulphuric acid will not work as a oxidiser here. Probably you get the Ether. ß-Methoxy-naphthaline.
