i'm reading an article about artificial photosynthesis and i can't understand the meaning of "sacrificial reagents"

I am familiar with regular photosynthesis but not artificial photosynthesis. Can you provide some context? My initial guess is that it is a compound whose purpose is to react with an undesirable (probably reactive) intermediate.
