IUPAC NAMES
« on: August 08, 2006, 09:03:25 AM »
Each of the following names is an incorrect IUPAC name.  Indicate, if possible, the correct name of the compound.   Can someone check my answers and if they are not right let me know and provide the write answers if incorrect.  Thanks I've been working on these for about 30 min and they are driving me crazy.

1.  4-butyl 1 -methyl 2 -hexene    I came up with 5, 7 diethyl tridecan
2.  2-ethylpentane                      I came up with 3 methyl hexane
3.  1-propyl 5 methyl benzene.    I came up with 3-methyl 1propyl benzatriene.

You got 2 right (3-methylhexane), and 3 partially right (3-methyl-1-propylbenzene)
For 1, just draw it out, count the longest carbon chain (I think you worked out is was 10, therefore: dec-x-ene), and then look at where the substituent is and find where the double bond in 4-butyl-1-methylhex-2-ene is.
