Caffeine and Iodine Solution reaction

I did my chemistry IA on caffeine extraction and I used Iodometric back titration to find the actual mass of caffeine extracted. The reaction required sulfuric acid but I have no idea why? Pls help?

I think the nitrogens in caffeine have to be protoned. Need an acidic pH.
