question about strong electrolytes
« on: October 09, 2006, 11:20:04 AM »
QUESTION, are the strong bases strong electrolytes?

and i don't get what this problem is asking for
Consider the following formula of species dissolved in water at room temperature.
W. NH3(aq)
X. NH4
Y. NH4Cl (aq)
Z. HCl
Which of them do not represent the major species present in the solution?

is it NH4 because it does not dissolve in water, and therefore it a minor species in the solution?

No, it does dissolve in water quite well because it's actually an ion NH4+

The answer lies in the fact that one of those reacts with water.

In my opinion, only NH4+ can be found in an aqueous solution.

In fact, NH3 reacts with water and you'll have NH4+ and OH-.
NH4Cl may be considered good, but I think you should say you don't actually see that salt. What you see, instead, are NH4+ and Cl-.
Finally. HCl reacts with water as well and the ions are H3O+ and Cl-.

NH3 ---> NH4+

NH4Cl -----> NH4+ + Cl-

HCl ---> H+ + Cl-

This is basically what will happen in aqueous solutions.

You can see that the only species you will see in aqueous solution is NH4+

That is right. Basically you will see NH4+ in aqueous solution but not HCl (you would see H+ and Cl-) or NH4Cl (you would see NH4+ and Cl-) or NH3.
