Chem 143 PS 6 Questions

Hi Mitch- I have several questions that need clarification:

1.In the first question (Loveland CH6 #9) it is states to assume all bands are characterized by the same moment of inertia in order to calculate the different energies.  If I do this I get degeneracies in the energies of different bands and futher, they do not increase in ascending order as they should as one moves from one excited state to the next.  It seems more reasonable to assume that the moment of inertia is the same WITHIN each type of band (ie. rotational, beta, gamma, octupole).  In addition, are the energies given in MeV (the book does not state)?

2.For the second question (Loveland CH6 #10) how does one predict the sign of the quadrupole moment?  It seems that more information needs to be provided, like the shape of the nucleus deformation.

3.In the third question, I am confused how to get the shell model to support a spin of 0 for 34Cl.  I suspect I am missing some fundamental concept.  In Loveland we are given an example of an odd-odd nuclei and calculating its spin but if I follow the example I get a spin of 3 for both the chlorine and potassium istotopes.

2.) See figure 6.15 and see where on the graph the odd particle would be lowest in energy.

1) I saw two different rotational bands and calculated the energy based on the same moment of inertia. Some lines are vibrational, so be careful.
