Column Chromatography: Process and Solvent Order
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:12:26 PM »
Label each statement as true or false.

a. A mixture of (+)- and (-)-carvone can be separated by column chromatography on silica gel using hexanes-acetone as elution solvent. False?

b. In general, column chromatography on silica gel is run with a series of solvents on increasing polarity. True?

c. Carvone is more polar than limonene. True?

Thanks.

Don't know about (c) as I dont have the time to look up structures.

(a) Correct as enantomers show identical physical properties except from their interaction with polarised light.

(b) Correct. One usually runs a gradient of increasing polarity.

It's nice to see you put your questions on here but have a stab at them first which is a nice thing to see.
