Doubt CR2032 battery
« on: November 17, 2022, 08:14:15 AM »
I have a PCB with a CR2032 battery soldered or inserted into the PCB and this PCB is stored after many years in storage and the CR2032 charge goes to 0% will this battery go into chemical enhancement to generate an oxidative corrosive compound and will it leak from the battery corroding the PCB?

I've had many motherboards stored for well over 10 years, some had emptied their battery below usable voltage for years, and no CR2032 battery leaked.

If the board is not used, why not remove the battery to avoid any risk.

Does this CR2032 battery leak and corrode the PCB or not? what is its chemical composition and if it turns into an oxidative corrosive compound? some people say yes other people say no but i have kept the PCB with the CR2032 inserted

Yes, the battery can leak, yes, the electrolyte can speed up the corrosion. Plenty of images if you just try to google them.

No, "can" doesn't mean "it will". If the PCB is in any way valuable or you expect it to be difficult to find when/if you need it in the future, removing the battery mitigates the risk.

Are there any chemical differences between older CR2032 batteries and CR2032 batteries made recently in recent years? Does this have anything to do with leaks that may occur?

I strongly doubt, probably differences between batteries from different manufacturers are much more important than differences between batteries made 10 years ago and today. Chemistry inside doesn't change, what can slightly change is the packaging technology - but again, this is not something universal, every manufacturer has its own approach.

will i have to remove all cr2032 from all my saved devices? ps2 slim consoles, cartridges and other electronics if I don't do this the cr2032 leaks and corrodes the circuits?

Up to you to decide. Definitely safer, but it is not like they are guaranteed to leak.

chemical composition of the CR2032 battery
« Reply #10 on: November 21, 2022, 06:42:51 AM »
What is the chemical composition of the CR2032 battery?

Is it an oxidative corrosive chemical composition for metals and PCBs?

over the years this chemical composition of CR2032 changes and turns into a corrosive oxidative chemical compound that leaks and corrodes?

Asking the same question again and again won't change the answer you got.

The MSDS of CR2032 includes the composition
https://resources-boschsecurity-cdn.azureedge.net/public/documents/MSDS_battery_CR2032_Special_enUS_79832247051.pdf

Yes, some compounds are oxidizers. MnO2 is a strong oxidizer, LiClO4 an extreme one.

Lithium will make corrosive compounds if it encounters the atmosphere.

Will a leak occur?  If a cell is pierced or crushed or corroded by some external action, yes. By discharge, my bet is: good quality cells won't leak, but poorly designed or manufactured ones will.

Removing the CR2032 has drawbacks in some circuits. I have known motherboards that don't start without a CR2032, or demand a Bios tuning at every start, possibly only after a hardware Cmos reset. Others start with degraded performance and with wrong clock time. More recent motherboards tend to behave better for that.

==========

Corrosion can and will also occur if the electronic circuit leaks current, typically if it's damp. Then, all conductors are susceptible to corrode electrochemically. This does not relate with the battery type, except for its voltage and maximum current.

I did what you guys recommended I removed all the CR2032 batteries from the PCB but some batteries have a trace of glue on top of the cr2032 what product can I use to clean the cr2032 battery without the product damaging this battery and without it penetrating inside it
