Types of translocases
« on: July 03, 2023, 06:46:57 AM »
Hello,
as I understand it, active translocases, which work against concentration gradient, need ATP to work. Then there are passive translocases which don't need ATP and just exchange two things (carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase). Are there any other?

You are mixing together properties that are orthogonal to one another.  There are transport processes that require energy* versus transport processes that do not.  There are uniports, symports, and antiports.**  But these properties are distinct from one another.
*the energy does not necessarily come from the hydrolysis of ATP.
**What do you think that these three terms mean?

There are antiports which require energy.  The sodium potassium ATPase is an important one, especially in the brain.  There are some uniports which require energy and others which just facilitate (speed up) diffusion.  The GLUTn family of glucose transporters falls into the latter category.
