I would like coat a clean block or ingot of lithium (in argon atmosphere) with a protective transparent layer so it could be touched and felt. The idea is that if I have it inside a glass ampoule or jar it is not possible to feel the sensation of its really low density.
So I will try with some varnish, i.e. epoxy or polyester. Other idea is silicone. I understand that with enough time nitrogen and oxygen could enter and tarnish it, so perhaps I have to keep it in a jar with argon (or in a vacuum container) and take it out only for demonstrations with students, etc. Of course, it would be ideal to have it exposed with the other metals of my collection only with the coating.
Demonstrations like: pick up both blocks of tungsten and lithium at the same time ...
Any idea?
Thank you very much!
