A few days ago, I attempted to extract bismuth metal from Pepto-Bismol tablets by using HCl (to dissolve the binder I guess) and aluminum foil to cause the bismuth to precipitate out as a dark powder. However, when I filtered the powder and applied heat, it just formed some crumbly ashes. Does anyone know the best way to extract the bismuth metal from Bismol?  These are the instructions I followed:
