Making a stock solution in DMSO
« on: March 06, 2024, 09:48:35 AM »
Hi! What does it mean to make a 1M stock solution of Nile Red in DMSO? I've never worked with either reagent before and unsure of the calculations to make this. How do I go about it?

Don't get sidetracked by the substances involved, it is a just a solute and solvent. Concentration is number of moles of Nile Red per volume of the solution, nothing more fancy.

Yes but I'm unsure how to start. I don't know how much DMSO I'm supposed to dissolve into water. The paper I'm using as a basis for my study only says to make a 1M stock solution of Nile Red, but doesn't say how much DMSO is needed in the final concentration.

I think there is no water involved. The stock solution uses DMSO as the solvent.

I wonder whether you might mean a 1 mM stock solution in DMSO.  I am not sure what the solubility limit is.

This takes me back! I think you're right... According to my old scribbled notes, it's soluble in DMSO up to about 10mM. With current prices a 1M solution would be quite an expensive undertaking!
