I don't understand which reaction mechanisms and chemical elements you have to use to form the second molecule.

It is easier to work backward from the product, one step at a time.  Which reactions have you learned so far?

I learned Friedel-Crafts alkylation, Grignard reagent and the Sandmeyer reactions. But I don't really understand how you form 2 benzene ring structures from 1 ring.

You can split up a sample of toluene into two smaller portions and do different chemistry with each portion.

Its a little confusing doing different things with the two toluene portions, it seems wrong. You have to draw the middle step product to make sense of this?
