triglyceride combustion w/ oxygen bonds broken & formed
« on: November 27, 2006, 11:17:49 PM »
we were given the combustion between triglyceride w/ oxygen

C37 H104 O6 + 80 O2 ----------> 57 CO2 + 52 H2O

So how would I figure out the number of broken bonds for
C-H
C-C
C-O
C=O
C=C
O=O

and the number of bonds formed for

C=O
O-H

Any help would be great  ;D

Draw out the structure for the substances on the left hand side. (for structures see wikipedia)
Count the different bonds, and remember to scale up by the coefficient.

Repeat for right hand side.

eg.

2H2 + O2 --> 2H2O

so,

LEFT (bonds broken)

H-H -> 2
H-O -> 0
O=O -> 1

RIGHT (bonds formed)

H-H -> 0
H-O -> 4
O=O -> o
