Coefficients and Equations
« on: January 10, 2007, 10:14:02 PM »
Balance the equation and consider the coefficients.

KClO3 + HCl -->  KCl + H20 + Cl2 + ClO2

If x = coefficient of KlCO3 and y = coefficient of ClO2, find the other coefficients in terms of x and y (I had a x+y in my notes but it's confusing at the moment so I am assuming it is and.)

I've balanced the equation many times and have gotten the answers but now I must find the coefficients in terms of x and y. I think I have balanced the equation enough times to accomplish this.

2,4,2,2,1,2
3,10,3,5,4,2
4,16,4,8,7,2
5,14,5,7,5,4
6,12,6,6,3,6
9,46,9,23,22,2

The coefficients are inorder with the equation. For example, the first one i listed (2,4,2,2,1,2):
The first 2 stands for 2 moles of KClO3 while the 4 stands for 4 moles of HCl.

I have attempted to find the other coefficients in terms of X and Y but have only found minimal success. So somehow Y, which has 3 coefficients with 2,must equal to different numbers using the same equation. My explanation might not be very good, but for example x = 2 and HCl =4. Then to express HCl in terms of x, HCl=2x. What I'm wondering is how can y = 2 be 1, 4, and 7 at the same time using the same equation.

KCl is equal to x is all i got.

I might be comprehending this wrong, and if so, please tell me.

Just wondering, have you read the question at all? I've already balanced the equation many times and was asking another question. So please, if you are telling me to follow rules, learn to read first.

P.S. I have already searched this on the forums and there was ONLY one topic talking about balancing it.

Hmm read it more thorougly, some useful information. Sorry :/

Just too bad he didn't explain more thorougly :(. I have figured out the problem so it's okay.
