Good evening everyone

I hope you guys could help me if you know the answer.

in the rxn of synthesize RuSCN₂(dcbpy)₂ [dcbpy=2,2'-bipyridyl dicarboxylic acid] from RuCl₂(dcbpy)₂,i am wondering whether I should add NaOH to deprotonate the carboxy groups of dcbpy. if the NaOh has to be added, why so?
