KNO3 + Sugar = ???
« on: January 25, 2007, 07:49:43 PM »
So, as you can see from the title this post is focusing on the products produced by KNO3 and Sugar being burnt. From my experiments I can conclude that

The solid product formed is soluable and white, since it is soluable I am guessing it is where the NO3 goes.

C12H22O11 + KNO3 --> Does anyone know what the products are?

I'm guessing water, CO2, and possibly also just C since I have noticed that there is some black ash residue.

Solid is most likely some mixture of K2O and K2CO3 (could be entirely the latter, but it may get decomposed to CO2 and K2O if the temperature is high enough), plus - if there is some brown/black color - some probably hard to analyse mixture of hydrocarbons/decomposed carbohydrates.

When it comes to products - apart from two obvious non-solid ones - N2.

As a side not, I happen to remember there being a topic or two in the past relating to potassium nitrate and sugar. It may be worth a quick search of the forums.
