Simple Organic Chemistry

1. Consider the compounds:
I. CH3COOH
II. CH3(CH2)4COOH
III. CH3(CH2)4COONa
IV. CH3(CH2)4OH

Which of the following sequences indicates the correct order of increasing solubility in water?
A. III<I<II<IV
B. II<I<IV<III
C. I<IV<II<III
D. IV<II<III<I

I know that like dissolves like, and water is polar, but I really have no clue about how to work this problem. Please help.

2. Also, can acetic acid (ethanoic acid) undergo condensation polymerization?

I'd really appreciate any help.

In this case that ability to dissociate will determine which ones are more soluble.  Keep the size of the molecule and subsequent ions in mind, too (a large nonpolar structure will overshadow a small polar one)

1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

I have a feeling that III is the most soluble because it has a metal cation (Na).  Am I right?

Yup.  Substances which ionize in water will generally be more soluble in water than compounds which don't ionize in water.  Now what about the others?

Hmm... actually looking at the answer choices again, I don't think the correct answer is to rank III as the most soluble.  RHS's reasoning was good about III, but one of the compounds is miscible in water in all proportions.
