This may be a stupid question.
« on: March 22, 2007, 10:40:36 PM »
I've came across a question for my Fundamental Chem I class that I can't find an answer on anywhere in the book or the internet.

Can ions be isotopes? Explain your answer. I believe that the answer is yes but think it's wierd that I can't really find the answer in my text.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct. But the question asked you to explain your answer, can you?

The number of protons is what determines what type of atom it is. I know that the number of electrons and neutrons can vary producing the ions and isotopes. So I assume that it could be possible for this to occur at the same time.
