I agree as well, I have been in trouble in my younger years, for setting off explosions, I was irresponsible I admit then, but people can do it as a legitimate hobby, I rarely do anyting pyro related myself now, but the laws are just too restrictive, even over in the UK.
Chemistry itself is a little more respectable in the UK as a private interest, with the likes of red phosphorus etc. actually legal to possess, there are just a few things, E.G acetic anhydride, that are restricted for purchase here, and most of those can be made with the likes of sandwich-toaster ghetto ketene generators and the like, which I believe, is half the fun of amateur chemistry, building your own equipment
I agree about guns, I wouldn't want the glorification of gun culture like they have in america, and guns sold in banks, stuff like that, but I wish ownership of guns was at least legal for self defense, as the criminal element of society already HAS guns, high powered automatics at that, which leaves a lot of people, that just want to legitimately protect their home and family defenseless.
The sad thing is, for instance, I own a high powered air rifle legally, and only use it for going out in woods with friends target shooting, I myself would never hurt an animal, and would never shoot a person that didn't pose an immediate threat to me or others, but even if I shot a knife wielding thug in an attempted robbery, I would almost certainly lose my gun, just for protecting myself, and possibly even lose it if I were caught with ammunition I use, as they now have a law specifically prohibiting explosing ammunition (I make my own ammunition, using MEK peroxide, Na metal pellets, and tracer rounds using white P
)
IMHO, with laws like that, it makes it almost impossible to defend ourselves, if there were ever to be a seisure of power by a despotic government, which I do kind of worry about these days, what with the road our government is going down
